I was 12 when we moved, so that’s when I began English.
I never studied English formally.

We spoke Japanese as a family, but they chatted in English.
With me it was half and half. Rhythm all over the place.

But were they bullied in Japan for thinking in English ways?

Maybe things have changed.
In my day, English-speaking kids were called names like “B-29”.
That was then.

I was 5 or 6 and wondered about the enemy’s language.
Then I heard it on the radio. “Come, come, everybody!”
That old song. It was so unexpected.
It was a way to make English fun.

Some parents think that kids with no English have no future.
Others think English will be tremendously useful in the future.

My child was learning to speak when we were in England.
She only understood English so that’s what we spoke at home.
She had no Japanese, so back in Japan she made no friends.
I thought that was bad, so we banned English at home.
Now she’s in junior high and speaking her native tongue.
